It is common to find a little of yourself in all nine of the types, although one of them should stand out as being closest to yourself. The meaning of these inner lines will be discussed shortly.įrom one point of view, the Enneagram can be seen as a set of nine distinct personality types, with each number on the Enneagram denoting one type. These six points form an irregular hexagram. The remaining six points are connected in the following order: One connects with Four, Four with Two, Two with Eight, Eight with Five, Five with Seven, and Seven with One. Note that points Three, Six, and Nine form an equilateral triangle. The nine points on the circumference are also connected with each other by the inner lines of the Enneagram. Each point represents one of the nine basic personality types. Designate each point by a number from one to nine, with nine at the top, for symmetry and by convention. It will help you understand the Enneagram if you sketch it yourself.ĭraw a circle and mark nine equidistant points on its circumference. The Enneagram’s structure may look complicated, although it is actually simple. The Enneagram, however, is ultimately subtle and complex, as you will appreciate the more you use it in your life. As you will see, only a few simple concepts are needed to begin your journey of self-discovery. Dont want to make any assumptions though, these childhood origins are hard to pinpoint. This explanation covers the basics that you will need to understand how the Enneagram works, and will be especially helpful for beginners. I can definitely say I have a few early childhood memories where I felt rejected by my dad (even though he is a very loving father).īased on what you shared I could see the same in your case, especially with your dad being away maybe when you needed him most after your moms passing. The theory says the child 2’s love to their protective caregiver was not reciprocated properly so the child Learned to start repressing their needs and focusing on those of others. I read about childhood theories based on Harmonic groups, and the 2s relationship with their parental nurturing (usually mothers) and caregiving figures (usually fathers). I rarely threw tantrums as my mom was very strict about that, but when I got angry it was intense (I’m guessing from bottling it up so often) and it mostly happened when I felt my pride challenged (jealousy most of the time). I was a “spoiled” child too and though I never thought about manipulating anyone, I always went after that I wanted and adults are pretty easy to charm if you are a nice, and well behaved child. Why unmet needs? I wonder where this story/moment of becoming a Two began. The only things I’d have to do were throwing tantrums or saying I wanted something, and I’d get it. I did receive attention, and was actually a kid that got everything that I wanted. Currently, I live with my dad and am an adult. After my grandparents retired, they had all the time to take care of me, but by then this only lasted from age 9-12. The type of upbringing I got was a spoiled child who had everything ‘special’ due to being an only child. As my grandparents still worked a lot and were busy, for the first 5-6 years (until I was 8-9) they worked full-time (9-5 job) and I’d stay with my nanny. After that, I went to live with my grandparents while my dad was away. In my own childhood, my mother passed away when I was 3 years old. Therefore the idea to serve others so we can get their love/attention. The central idea is that ‘Mother’ was not fully available or loving, and a person’s needs were not met.
